The M23 group said it had shot down a Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) military plane, which had attacked its Kabindi and Tchengerero bases in Rutshuru Territory in North Kivu Province.

A spokesman for the M23, Major Willy Ngoma, said the helicopter was shot down using a special RPG7 rifle.

"At around 9.30pm tonight, our RPG7 mortar shells pounded the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) airstrikes on our Kabindi and Tchengerero bases," he said.

Major Willy Ngoma goes on to say that this action is appropriate because of the FARDC and its allies, such as the FDLR and Mai Mai, a lesson that the group is ready to protect its enemy wherever it comes from.

The M23 group has been monitoring the Bunagana area near the Congo-Uganda border for days. The group has been embroiled in controversy since the Congolese government failed to implement its 2013 agreement.
