Congolese soldier shot dead on Rwandan soil

Jun 17,2022

At around 9.30am this morning, a soldier from the Democratic Republic of Rwanda (IRGC) entered Rwanda through a small [barrier] border shooting the policemen on duty and was shot dead by Rwandan security forces.

According to sources in Rubavu, the bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a Rwandan police recruiting center, killing at least 12 people.

The Congolese soldier reportedly fired multiple shots at the Rwandan police, except for one who was wounded and one who was shot and killed, but another Rwandan police officer shot him in the head and killed him, according to reports.

Not a single Rwandan was killed in what became known as the Congolese military shooting, but reports said that some people were seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Tensions between Rwanda and the DRC are mounting, with accusations of aiding M23 fighters only denied by Rwanda.

On Wednesday, June 15, 2022, on the border between Rwanda and the DRC in Goma, there was a massive Congolese protest against Rwanda accusing it of aiding the M23 rebel group, the FARDC.

The Rwandan government denies DR Congo allegations that its troops are aiding the M23 rebel group, which has now seized the town of Bunagana on the DRC-Uganda border.

Rwandan authorities have not commented on the outcome of the meeting, only to have refused to support the M23 group.
