Former Bolivian president seeks suicide in custody

Aug 23,2021

Former Bolivian President Jeanine Anez on Saturday sadly amputated her arm while in custody, according to her legal counsel, Norka Cuellar, according to local media after police treated her act as a suicide.

"This is a call from the former president. He feels very persecuted," the lawyer told reporters.

"The doctor came in and found him with 3 wounds on her left arm," Cuellar said.

Anez was jailed earlier this year on charges of involvement in the overthrow of President Evo Morales in 2019. He denied the allegations and said he was being abused for political reasons. He is in prison while he is awaiting trial.

Security Minister Eduardo del Castillo confirmed that Anez had tried to harm himself but was now in good health, according to Reuters.

Jeanine Anez is a 66-year-old Bolivian politician and lawyer who led the transition from November 2019 to November 2020.
